Quality in art is always subjective to a certain degree (not just referring to Astral Weeks).and all that matters is does it work.for you. It is a MUCH darker album than Moondance.Astral Weeks has a dream like quality to it that the arrangements with the vibes and strings help strikes me as very personal album in a way that John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is, very direct, pouring their heart right into the record (though the truth might be different).Neil Youngs Tonight the Night, Robert Johnson,'s stuff and Springsteen's Nebraska strike me that way as well. and I don't think it is over rated one little bit, I have been listening to it for about 30 years now, and never once thought it was anything but top notch (I don't really think about "all others" all that much, general consensus is usually not the way to find quality, and I don't think Astral Weeks ever sold that well when it came out), it is a very different kind album though, and I could see why some people not like get it.musically for the audience it was aiming at, it seems very adventure some.but I love his singing, the songs, and the arrangements, wouldn't change a thing, including the recent longer versions, which I don't really think work better than the original edits. I hear Astral Weeks as a kind of follow-up to TB Sheets.
